Stress
may be defined as non-specific response to the
varying demands on the body. Stress is critically
related to our physical, mental and emotional
health. Mostly, stress is referred to as a negative
factor posing health hazard. However, stress can
help to keep a person alert and motivated to accomplish
more than what would otherwise be achieved. A
lack of stress can just be as much of a problem
as too much of stress.
Stress is influenced by external and internal
factors. The physical and social environments
we live in are external in nature and psychological
factors related to any given person shall be purely
internal.
External factors aggravating the stress could
be due to polluted air, water or environment,
excessive noise, unreasonable or arrogant encounters
from people around us, tragic or shocking events
occurred in our life, unexpected break down of
apparatus in use etc.

Internal
factors leading to stress revolves around our personal
traits and specific life style. Extreme sense of
analysis, pessimistic and negative thinking, auto
suggestion, self-criticism, over working, sleeplessness,
stubbornness in attitude, perfectionism etc are
some of the instances of internal factors.
Though the body is amazingly adaptable to the stress,
the immune mechanism fails after a certain level
when overwork and exhaustion dominate. Stress management
involves monitoring the stress levels and the technique
of overcoming excess stress. Most stress is self
generated and needs looking inwardly – this
is where stress management assumes a significant
role in ensuring a healthy and happy living. The
goal in treating stress is not to eliminate it but
to learn how to manage it and use it to our advantage.
As we strive to find an optimal level of stress
in our lives we will start to see that proper amounts
of stress motivate us to excel in our performance
and disproportional levels of stress can suffocate
and overwhelm us.
Stress affects each individual differently, and
the body responds differently. Stress is a complex
phenomenon. The wear and tear of everyday life has
taken a toll on us, with distress signals appearing
in a variety of ways; anger, anxiety, depression,
fatigue, negativity, irritability, hypertension,
and even heart attacks. A sense of being besieged,
exploding easily at seemingly inconsequential things,
frequent headaches and gastrointestinal disturbances,
weight loss, sleeplessness and depression are the
warning signals for stress. Shortness of breath,
suspiciousness and helplessness also identify a
stressed out person. Take a close look at what is
said about you in your MAPP, and what you are naturally
motivated towards your work. You might be one of
those stressed out persons requiring immediate attention.
